Closing the FMDX season 2018

If the FMDX season 2018 was generally saying weak, the end was even weaker. Tropos have brought almost nothing to inner Finland and perseids seemed very weak this year. Few small OIRT openings I have spent in work. Anyway I expect to have around 100 new FM stations (reports), so in the end season was not a total catastrof. The total number of logs reach 620 which is all time second best since 2001! (2017: 641 – 2016: 417 – 2015: 324 – 2014: 566 – 2013: 364). Maybe there was less openings, but mainly I happened to be in QTH when something was going on. Honestly saying only on July 12 I would have stayed rather at home than museum – but that’s the life.

Late night conditions indicate usually a morning start. DX Sherlock looked fine in the morning, and soon French stations faded in. The highest noted frequency was 94.5 MHz. Not long lasting opening, all gone before I even left to work around 0730 UTC. Blind recording (95.7 MHz) during work day was practically empty, except multiple meteors. In one of them bright id as ”Radio Een” brought new heard MS country BEL! In the evening some Komi on OIRT. Bootidit 3.1.

Bootidit (eli kvadrantidit) oli melkoinen pettymys tänä vuonna, etenkin edellisvuoteen verrattuna. Kiveä tuli päivän aikana ajoittain hyvinkin, mutta idit olivat tiukassa. Maksimin aikaan perjantai-iltana suunta oli W-E. Jonkun verran norjaa pingasikin takakeilalla, sillä antenni osoitti Moskovaan. Moskovan tykkejä onkin yritetty ahkerasti, mutta jostain syystä ne tulevat harvinaisen nihkeästi. Minulle ei jäänyt edes tentatiivista havaintoa. Briteille tämä vuosi oli ilmeisesti paljon parempi, sinne tuo itäpingi tuokin puolen Eurooppaa kuuluville.

100.100 1.1. 1350- G: Classic FM. Minuutinpituisella roikaleella sonaatin loppu ja kuulutuksessa audio-ID. Tässä eri lähettimiä. 9 minuuttia aiemmin tuli tanskaa, muttei taida päästä jyvälle, kumpi taajuuden kaupallisista se oli. Siinäpä tämän päivän mainittava saldo.
100.100 3.1. 1130- S: SR P4 Sörmland. Eskilstuna-tx. MS. Podcastiin verrattuja paikallisuutisia ja reilua tuntia myöhemmin ketju-ID ”midnatt i P4”, sekin kai täältä. Jatketaan local-ID:n pyytämistä..
100.400 3.1. 1504- D: MDR 1 Radio Sachsen. Hoyerswerda -tx. MS. ”…radio mit Peggy Wolter..” ja Sachsen -maininta.
100.400 3.1. 1337- D: WDR 2. Bonn-tx. ID sekunnin pingissä ”auf WDR”.

Raportit noista nyt lähti kuitenkin Eskilstunaan ja Kölniin, molemmat varsin väkisin väännettyjä. P4-asemia on tallessa tropolla vasta 4/25. Stokiksen olen kuullut tentatiivisena, mutta Suomipop on siinä liian vahva. Loput P4:t olisivat jo meteorinkin rangella (500+ kilometriä) ja tehot useimmiten 60 kW. Tuurilla ne ovat irrotettavissa. Sama koskee tietysti Tanskan alueohjelmia, miksei Norjankin! Molemmissa maissa olisi tarjolla myös radionovia, siis kaupallisia suurtehoasemia. Seuraava DX-käyttöön soveltuva meteorisade lienee perseidit vasta elokuussa, joten nyt Sony menee keräämään pölyä neljäksi kuukaudeksi. Sitten ES saa jo tulla!


English summary:
This year the quadrantids were not very favorable for Finland. Many of us have been trying to catch meteor scatter from Moscow, but in some reason even the high power transmitters are very hard to hear. Just now I have been adding Scandinavian high power transmitters (regionals and commercial stations) on my personal catch list. Most of them are  a bit too far for tropospheric reception but too close for Sporadic E. This time I reported SR P4 Sörmland (6 kW) and heard some Danish and Norwegian aswell.
