Loggings in Uurainen July 22-29

22.7.2014
-Troposcatter to Estonia
-First opening to Romania and Bulgaria
-Second opening to Balkan and Hungary
-Third opening to Italy and Slovenia
-Fourth short opening to Benelux

Three first openings were audible partly same time and the stations were interfering each others, which is a bit annoying since there is a limited amount of ES hours in a summer. Usually I listen with only one receiver (some guys use even 7 tuners 😉 ) but this time I tested my former first receiver Kenwood KT-6050 with 3 element antenna. Recording system is old fashioned C-cassette. Full log here.

-Short skip to Moscow region, later longer to same direction (Saratov)
-Surprising double hop to Portugal, 27 seconds but the ID ”na TSF” was given when the reception was best

I tested Tecsun PL-310 for OIRT reception connected to 3-element Yag.  Results were not perfect but still something heard that is better than nothing. Mostly Radio Rossii transmitters – but they have regional service at certain time so there is something to hear also with this equipment. Visual log here, will be updated when OIRT recordings are listened.

-late evening opening to Scotland – only BBC stations – possible commercial stations frequencies blocked here

-Short opening to France same time with another opening to Eastern Alps. Again stations were interfering each other and French dropped just when I turned antenna towards English Channel which is more interesting and rare direction for me.
-OIRT continuously open to different directions with few signals
-BBC Radio 2 trying twice on lower band

-Morning tropo to Northern Sweden – maybe I slept the best moments. No commercial stations.
-Small opening to Czech Republic and Bavaria again same time with very short skip to Scandinavia. Normal skip to Germany and the Netherlands. In the end good opening to UK with private stations too.

Something out of nothing

Kuluneella viikolla missasin kahdet brittikelit. Molemmat osuivat vieläpä kohtuullisen kovan ukkosmyrskyn ajaksi, joten paljoa ei olisi kai voinut kuunnellakaan, vaikka olisi kotona ollutkin. Ensimmäisen myrskyn aikana Jyväskylä tulvi ja toinen osui puolestaan Äänekoskelle kauppareissun ajaksi. Paluumatkalla (24 km) oli tie kolme kertaa ihan kuiva ja kolme kertaa märkä. Kuurot olivat rankkoja ja 10 minuutissa vettä tuli 4mm. Se ei paljon naurata uraisella tiellä, kun kesärenkaan urasyvyys on laillinen 2mm.

Aina välillä kuitenkin kuului jotain. Suurin osa avauksista ei lähtenyt ollenkaan kunnolla käyntiin tai jäi etelän iloitteluksi. Vaikka MUF kävikin välillä yli sadan, keli oli pääosin heikkoa ja kuuluneet asemat olivat lähestulkoon pelkkiä 50-250 kW suurtehomyllyjä. Veikkaan, että ES-pilven tiheys vaikuttaa tähän jotenkin. Pienempi tiheä pilvi heijastaa pieneltä alueelta pikkuasematkin, iso ja harva taas suurelta maantieteelliseltä alueelta vain valtion asemia. Benelux-kelin pilvi oli alussa ilmeisesti iso ja tiheä, sillä bandi meni tukkoon ja aivan puuroksi. Pian tilanne kuitenkin parani ja signaalit eivät enää puuroutuneet.

IDit olivat tiukassa ja logaamieni asemien tunnistaminen perustuu osittain RDS-koodeihin, ohjelmien tai juontajien nimiin, puhelinnumeroihin tai muihin aihetodisteisiin. Osan BBC2 ja 4FM-asemista lokasin vain kuuluneiden samaa lähettävien taajuuksien perusteella. Mitään puhtaita oletuksia en kuitenkaan logiin syöttänyt, vaikka soittolistojen ja ohjelmatietojen perusteella tentatiivisia logauksia saisi kirjoitettua varmasti tuplamäärän.

English summary:
Recently the conditions have been pretty weak but still something personally new stations were audible. Although the maximal useful frequency has been over 100 MHz, the stations have been mostly big networks (50-250 kW). Very few ID’s but lot of RDS’s, phone numbers, DJ names etc.. Waiting for more to come.

17.7.2014 Iceland!

Today we had a little opening to Iceland in Southern and Central Finland – rarely just after the noon as it usually has been heard around the midnight. Only one transmitter in Gagnheidi reported here in Uurainen (both channels on 87.7 and 99.8 were audible). Many DXers caught more RUV frequencies and also the commercial network Bylgjan was heard. This direction is hard for me because of blocking giant trees but I can’t help it because most of them are not on my land. Still something heard that is a real miracle. The positive side is that this tight forest block pretty well interfering transmitters from Western Finland – still Sveriges Radio from Vännäs is a daily thing.. All the other directions from Ural to British Isles are more or less open sky (and also interferences are stronger).

14.7.2014 – UKR – MDA – ROU – Balkan – SVK – G

Tulihan heinäkuussa vielä kunnollinen kelipäiväkin. Tosin kuuntelu ei mennyt oikein putkeen. Asemat soittivat joko tauotonta musiikkia tai sitten vain puhuivat puhumistaan. Pahimpia ohareita olivat lukuisat siirtymät musiikista mainoksiin tai puheesta mainoksiin tai mainoksista musiikkiin ilman mitään viitettä identiteetistä. Vetipä joku asema levyjen väliin täysverisen spiikinkin kertomatta kuitenkaan nimeään. Pari idiä jäi myös kuulematta, kun tulin taajuudelle jinglen juuri loppuessa. Joskus homma vaan menee puihin. Tunnistettujakin ihme kyllä kuului, mutta ne olivat itselleni suureksi osaksi jo entisestään tuttuja.

Jouduin  poistumaan akuutin sairastapauksen vuoksi pian ensimmäisen avauksen jälkeen joten jätin sokkotallenteen 87.8:lle. Toisen avauksen kuuntelua Keski-Suomessa haittasi kesken kelien osunut voimakas ukkosmyrsky. Matkalla päivystyksestä kotiinpäin vettä tuli niin, että tiet tulvivat ja ukkonenkin oli tehnyt tuhojaan- mm. Laajavuoresta olivat pimentyneet 91.3 Järviradio ja 104.5 Loop. Kts. Oma QTH ja antennit säilyivät onneksi vaurioitta. Samoin radio ja läppäri vaikka jännitin aika lailla niiden puolesta. Myrskyn mukana oli noussut pari asemaa 87.8:lle – toinen puhui serbokroatiaa ja toinen soitti balkanilaista musiikkia. Kun pahin myrsky Jyväskylässä hellitti, JJH koki bandin ja Balkan-kelin kanssa samaan aikaan päällä olleen brittikelin MUF oli muikea 106. Kotiin kerettyäni alabandilla tuli kuitenkin enää heikkoja nostoja (ilmeisesti Holme Mossin BBC:t). 91.3:lla feidaili ilmeisesti Ålands Radio YLEX:n alta. 104.5:ttäkin ehdin meteorien varalta tallentaa hetken, ennen kuin kantoaallot taas kytkeytyivät.

Seuraavana aamuna mm. Rostovin asemia kuultiin OIRT:lla. Kun avasin Sonyn, soi 87.5 humppa ja 88.5 identifioi olevansa Elit FM. MUF putosi pian takaisin OIRT:lle, ja tätä pikkutöhäystä lukuunottamatta ei 15.7.2014 jäänyt lokikirjoihimme kelipäivänä.

Finally good conditions in July, but it was hard to identify stations and most of them were already heard and QSLed. I had to leave suddenly after the first opening, but I left recording mode on and Sony was tuning on 87.8. Whilst I was away, a strong thunderstorm caused lot of damage in Central Finland – see the article. Also two local stations on 91.3 and 104.5 got silent. Luckily, when I came back home, all the listening equipment were still working and the house still standing. During the storm we had had an opening to British Isles up to 106 MHz and also some Balkan stations. At the moment I arrived there were still slight signals which must come from BBC tower in Holme Moss. For very short time I heard Swedish on 91.3 (probably Ålands Radio from the halfway to Sweden) before the carrier of Järviradio was fixed again.

R.I.P. 88.4 MHz

Legendaarisen päivystystaajuuden tarina on ohi. Vaikka hetkittäin elettiin toivossa, ettei tuo ylimääräinen täytelähetin aloittaisikaan, niin Kompassin 88.0 antoi silti sitkeästi AF:na 88.4 ja jopa ohjelmassa luvattiin Äänekosken alilähettimen tulevan käyttöön. Pahat enteet alkoivat jo 8.7. aamulla kantoaalto- ja RDS-testein. Tauoton ohjelmavirta kytkeytyi päälle 1214:55 UTC kesken mainosbreikin ilman sen suurempia seremonioita. 88.0:n ”menetys” ei harmittanut jostain syystä läheskään niin paljon ja totta puhuen Uuraisilta pääsee tarvittaessa ohittamaan Taka-Keljon jopa niin, että Kompassi kuuluu vain kohinatasossa ilman ainuttakaan tolppaa (etäisyyttä hiukan reilu 30 kilometriä).

Vaikka vapaita taajuuksia on täällä vielä ihan mukavasti verrattuna moneen ”kasvukeskukseen”, on alabandi (87.5-92.0) täyttynyt vaivihkaa täälläkin siitä kun FM-kuunteluun aloin tutustua. Alkuvuosina (n. 10 vuotta sitten) bandi oli lähes unelmallinen, sillä täällä kuuluivat vain YLE:t 87.6, 88.1, 88.3, 88.6, 89.4, 89.9, 90.7, 91.1, 91.6 ja 91.9 ja kaupallisista Järviradion 87.9 ja 89.6 heikonpuoleisesti ja Kuopion Aalto 89.1. Tietysti sen aikaisilla virittimillä roiskeet olivat lähitaajuuksilla aikamoisia.

Nyt on tullut lisää Radio Novan V-alilähettimet 87.8 ja 90.2, Kompassille 88.0 ja 88.4, suoraan etelän suuntaan Jämsään NRJ 88.8 ja Aalto 89.6, Järviradiolle 90.5 ja 91.3, Nostalgia 90.9 ja YLE Puhe Joutsa 91.4. Tällä hetkellä rikkana rokassa vielä Pihtiputaan väliaikaistaajuus 89.3. Kaukaisemmat skatterinousut (esim. Espoo, Eurajoki, Joutseno) haittaavat jonkin verran. Onneksi aika monta taajuutta on vielä kokonaan tyhjänäkin ja joistain maakunnan V-lähettimistä voimakas ES tulee yli H-polarisaatiolla.

Aloin tallentaa 88.4:ää jo kvadrantideilla tammikuussa, kun taajuuden tulevaisuus selvisi. Jatkoin kuitenkin tehotarkkailua vielä ES-kauden alkaessa ja ehdinkin tallentaa taajuutta epäsäännöllisen säännöllisesti lähes kahden kuukauden ajan! Tuona aikana irtosi 20 asemaa 13 maasta, joista noin puolet vieläpä uusia minulle. Makoisampana ehkä Sveitsin ensikuuleminen – klipissä ei taida olla asemakuulutusta, mutta oudosti äännetty saksa johdattu tutkimaan SRF:n soittolistoja, jotka mätsäävät. Myös ennenkuulematon DFM Kurganinsk tarttui nauhalle.

English summary:

One of the worst DX moments this summer took place on July 8, 2014 at 12.14:55 UTC when Radio Kompassi started broadcasting on 88.4 MHz, around 10-15 kilometres (less than 10 miles) from here. The frequency was optimal to observe the beginning of Sporadic E conditions and rising MUF – not much interfering troposcatter station and lot of stations in Europe. Since it was announced that the frequency will be occupied soon, I have recorded or received 20 stations from 13 countries in two months on this frequency. Best catches: Switzerland first time for me and DFM Kurganinsk first time in Finland – they also QSLed!

Something from Russia

July 8th we had very short one cloud condition to Russia. Fellow DXer JY identified Radio Rekord Saratov 88.7. It might fit to the same cloud.

Back in the business

After a two and half week long silent period we have had little openings here in Central Finland. West coast guys were enjoying even  MUF 108 conditions which lasted for 9 hours nonstop! I have passed a week as a holiday on both sides of English Channel – and also visited two radio stations (VBRO in Brugge and Radio Cristal in Évreux). I’m going to write more about it later. During my trip there was mostly nothing heard so the timing seems to be perfect.

030707072014On July 3rd a small opening to France, later some stations from London and Southern England and then Piemonte. On July 4th short but good opening to Tatarstan and Bashkiria. Markku Sollo caught China on three frequencies in Tohmajärvi! That’s a real DX (clips available here) – last year he captured Big FM 92.7 from Srinagar, India! On July 5th I was not at home, but there was reported only small OIRT opening to Ukraine. July 6th started with little skip to Romania while I was having lunch and then good opening to the border of Ukraine and Russia. Today July 7th we had two little opening in Inner Finland, first for Bavaria (shorter skip to Prague and longer to Trento) and second better to CZE and AUT offering also HRT stations and a new-for-me Hungarian on 88.4, but unfortunately no ID. I am still wondering to report it, since there are clearly local commercials and the frequency won’t be no longer free..

As we are requested for audio clips, I’m gonna enclose an interesting UNID – most probably a pirate station from London or nearby. However I found a forum conversation which claims that 92.8 should be nowadays free in London. I’m not sure if there is an ID also on this clip – can’t get it. Maybe a new pirate?!
