19 June 2017: evening opening from TUR to Wales

Again a relatively good opening, best moments were for Czechia and Hungary, when some stations beated local transmitters! So far this season has been extremely good, till today total number of my logs is 377. Compared to full seasons 2016 (417) and 2014 (566) it can be that this will be the best ever, at least if July won’t be totally silent. 2013 (364) and 2015 (324) are not totally comparable, because I was off in August. Visual log here.

8 June 2017: BIH, CZE, POL, D, AUT, later Benelux, G, F with DNK!

From the bed to the band. Morning opening was already going on at 0550 UTC on lower band, bringing Bosnian, Czechia, Poland, Germany and Austria. Mostly basic stations. I had to leave QTH for 40 minutes, between 0640-0720 UTC, and when driving, I enjoyed the selection of songs CRo 1 on 89.7, including ”I wasn’t expecting it now”. Fits perfectly to the feeling 🙂 The band closed a bit after I came back, afterwards it was annoying to notice an arab on blind recording which I roughly changed to the other frequency, because the signal was ”too weak”.. Next time then!

An hour later the strongest BBCs appeared and soon band was open to BeNeLux. Next 30 minutes of DNK MUF 108 were definitely the best half an hour of my DX history! It is pretty rare to have a widely open band for such a short distance (1100-1200 km!)

Guys in Utö pedition described today as ”second best day ever in Utö” which is not hard to believe!

6 June 2017: small F opening, new MS country

Late night conditions indicate usually a morning start. DX Sherlock looked fine in the morning, and soon French stations faded in. The highest noted frequency was 94.5 MHz. Not long lasting opening, all gone before I even left to work around 0730 UTC. Blind recording (95.7 MHz) during work day was practically empty, except multiple meteors. In one of them bright id as ”Radio Een” brought new heard MS country BEL! In the evening some Komi on OIRT. Identified stations visually: http://www.fmlist.org/fm_logmap.php?datum=2017-06-06&omid=1183

Today’s highlights (once again)

5 June 2017: from BEL to BUL

For 2 hours short-lasting but strong reflections from West to East Europe, very difficult to follow and MUF was moving 80-100-80-100-80 continuously. Band was silent for 5 minutes, and open for another 5 minutes, then same again.. Still one new-for-me station Ritmo 80 from Bari on 87.8. Bari needs a bit overlong skip (2453 km) which happens every now and then during weak Balkan openings. Maybe Adriatic sea and tropospheric ducting helps a bit!?

24 May 2017: OIRT Russia and Benelux, F and D

First WhatsApp alert came already around 9.00 local time from TV Voice on 65.75 MHz, but conditions didn’t start yet. After full 7 hours work day next alert came during my way home, and made me push gas pedal a bit deeper. It took some time to open the rx, because a (wanted) guest arrived to dacha just a bit after me, bringing a bike I bought.

Finally to the balcony, a fading OIRT opening offered many GTRK stations during the regional window 1510-1559 UTC, with shorter skip to Belarus. After 16 UTC another opening started suddenly bringing stations from Benelux and nearby, unfortunately it was very short.. Today’s personal log can be found here. 48 logs so far are an average start for this season!

Today’s highlights:

ES July 31 and August 1-5

After a flop July ES seems to be activating little by little. On July 31, morning conditions offered some UKR and MDA on OIRT. Highest log was Radio Shanson with rolling RDS on 88.8 MHz. Next day continued with OIRT conditions to Komi. Conditions were good, also Radio Rossii transmitters listed as 100 W and 400 W were audible, but unfortunately there is nothing much to hear from Komi under 100 MHz. All signals disappeared around 0900 UTC, so I couldn’t confirm, if GTRK Komi-Gor has a regional bulletin from 0910 to 1000 UTC.. maybe next time!

On August 2, surprisingly good evening opening to Benelux and France up to 108 MHz for one hour, with some double hop to Spain! (NB: Could have been prelonged Tropo over Bay of Biskaya too!). Spain will be difficult to identify, but guys on South-Western coast had better condx towards Iberian peninsula! Only some of the Spanish signals reached inner Finland. From France mostly networks as France Inter, Fun Radio, MFM, Nostalgie and NRJ. From Belgium Radio Contact and a new-for-me network Joe FM.

During inactive July many of us have found new hobbies: sailing, fishing, stamp collecting or picking up berries and mushrooms (it’s the best season now for them!). In this picture you can see some of 20-30 porcinos (penny buns) under my old abandoned Alfa Romeo, which seems to be optimal athmosphere for such a mushroom (enough humid and probably soon rusty!)

July 4th brought no conditions at all, but MUF was 108 literally next day, just after midnight on the South Coast. Unfortunately the best skip didn’t reach inner Finland, but some low band stations were audible for short time (i.e tentatively RAI 87.8).

July 5th, the summer meeting day started with 30 minutes OIRT conditions in the morning to UKR/BLR. A new-for-me station Svitle Radio Emmanuel 67.82 ided. Last time night conditions trigged super day June 8, this time we were expecting a little bit more than this, but even MUF 74 is good compared to MUF24.

November Pirate DX

Dark nights, long dusk mornings and twilight are good for AMDX. Nothing much on BC-bands, but pirate bands offer always something new to catch. Snow has reached Central Finland on November 15th.

Log 8.11.-15.11.

3009 14.11. 2239- BLR: Integral Radio, Minsk. Antoi raportteja, QSO Barhan. Konekivääritahdilla ”Eta Integral Radio Minsk” raporttien alkuun. Nimi aukeni vasta Barhanin vastauksesta.
3009 14.11. 2212- RUS: Barkaz, Lipetsk 3-i raion. Voronezhista. Muita taajuudella raportin saaneita olivat Albatros, Tishina Luganskista, ja Kolektiv. Kaikki QSOt ei tulleet läpi, mikä vaikeutti entisestään seuraamista.
3009 14.11. 2246- RUS: Proton, Kursk. QSO Barkaz.
3053 14.11. 2142- KAZ(?): Astana.
3053 14.11. 2147- RUS: Radio Planeta, Tambov.
3053 14.11. 2148- RUS: Radiostantsiya Kurier, Tambov. Moskova ja Keski-Venäjä on kolmatta piiriä (3-i raion).
3053 14.11. 2143- RUS: Radiostantsiya Pokhtakor? Luultavasti venäläinen tämäkin.
3053 14.11. 2156- RUS(?): Radio Propko? ”..rabota Radio Propko..” erottui.
3060 14.11. 2325- RUS: Bulvar Radio, Orjol.
3095 13.11. 2013- RUS: Radio Standard, Ryazan. Selkeää idailua vahvasti ”Govorit Radio Standard, gorod Ryazan(?)”. Kestojutunjuurena säätiedot näillä asemilla.
3095 13.11. 1957- RUS: Radiostantsiya Teremok, Belgorod.
3115 13.11. 1938- UKR: Veteran, Donetsk. Kusolla tämäkin, vasta-asemista ei ottanut tolkkua.
3135 14.11. 2316- RUS: Kommers, Voronezh. QSO Inspektor
3903 15.11. 2013- HOL: Radio Alice. Musiikki ajoittain ihan kuunneltavasti.
3930 13.11. 2221- UKR: Radio Evropa, Donetsk. Ja rokki soi. Vastasi e-kortilla ennen kuin ehdin varsinaisesti raportoidakaan (livenä chattiin antamieni kuuluvuustietojen perusteella).
5800 15.11. 1940 HOL: Zender Akenzo, Zwolle. Painoi reippaat S9+20dB stabiilisti.
6213 14.11. 1547- HOL: Radio 42. Saunaillan alkumainingeissa kuului uusi hollantilainen. Monikielistä idailua eurooppalaisilla valtakielillä koneäänellä.
6235 8.11. 0945-1050 HOL: Radio Casanova, Winterswijk (Ge). Paljon muuta ei sitten kuulunutkaan antennitestin aikana. Noh, kaiketi Cupido kuppaisesti kuuskolmenollaviis.
6290 14.11. 1530- HOL: Ronalisa Radio, Emmen. Aiemmin kuulemani Ronnie AM on tämän nimialias.
6319 8.11. 1505- CZE/POL: Radio Goofy.
10460 13.11. 0639-0705 RUS: (Alexey) Kilowatt, Krasnodar. Mode LSB. Vasta-asemina mm. UKW, Antena 2 ja Sajuz. Mahdollisesti myös Kropotkin ja Rostova. Katsotaan saisiko näiltä verifiointeja…

07 & 08 July 2015

July 7th was a good day for FMDXers, all day long. I was not at home, but here are some loggings by Janne in Jyväskylä (30 km SE from me). Jim from Bromarv (South-West Finland) reports:

0930 utc aloitettiin puolen tunnin Ranskakelillä, mukana myös Galician kulma. 1120-1200 utc oli vuorossa lisää Ranskaa, muf 108. Ranska rysähti kunnon menoon taas 1410-1450 utc, muf koko ajan 108. 1715-1735 tykitti vuorostaan Venäjän Balakovo muffin 108:aan.

July 8th was even better, at least what comes to the amount of loggings. Janne’s results can be seen here. My personal log is here. We both got around 10 new stations.

I was not at home 0839-1207 UTC, so I missed the ROU/MDA/TUR opening. We were visiting the old church of Petäjävesi that belongs to the UNESCO world heritage list. This year is the 250th anniversary.

26 Jun 2015: Germany, France, Czech Republic, Ireland, Benelux

All day long ES was trying on low band, and lots of UNID stations were noted at various times. Around 11 UTC I heard 88.9 RTL Luxemburg, 88.7 Chérie FM and 89.7 France Musiques. Juha heard Spain around 12 UTC. A bit later Radio Dallas Loisirs from France showed the RDS on 89.1 MHz, unfortunately only music was audible. Around 1515 UTC I heard that someone was talking loudly upstairs in German. Obviously Sony XDR had caught a foreign signal on an empty frequency. Also RDS was seen on the screen (MDR_SACH). During a quick bandscan the highest log was 106 MHz. That was the beginning of the best conditions this summer, which were favorable to Germany and France with some Czech stations. This opening lasted for more than 2 hours, with Maximal Useful Frequency (MUF) 108 MHz most of the time. After a 30-minute-long break the conditions started again, this time to the British Isles. Exceptionally Ireland was heard too. MUF was up to 100 MHz but only few stations on the band. Later 1924-1945 UTC we had Benelux on low band. Waiting for more to come tomorrow!!!

25 Jun 2015: BeNeLux, Germany, Italy, Balkan, Greece

Today’s conditions were considered as the best opening of season 2015. At least it was the strongest which was not positive in the beginning. The FM band was full of signals from Croatia to the Netherlands, practically from every European country, with 3 to 5 stations on every frequency causing horrible noise. Maybe a whip would have given better results (band less full…). Most of the stations were big powerhouse networks, and small private stations couldn’t pass througout the noise. Quickly BeNeLux dropped and Es was favorable for Balkan and Hungary (MUF still over 100 MHz). Then it turned again to Italy. In two hours the conditions seemed to be already over, but surprisingly two frequencies faded in (89.2 & 91.2) and gave id’s in Greek. New heard FM country for me (2402 km!) Further log might be published here in the near future!
