Pirate Hunt 2019 results and announcement.

The organizers of the Pirate Hunt competition has decided this year to publish the results of the competition without the rankings.  It has been alleged that listeners with SDR receivers are in a better position than listeners with normal receivers, so in order to avoid unnecessary displeasure, we decided to solve the problem this way.  Many thanks to all participants.

When we first decided to run the competition, our idea was to have a nice Easter activity without strict rules. Just relaxing and having fun.  Over the years, perhaps the right criticisms have been made of competition: our choices were to either renew the competition or put the competition to a break.  Since both of the organizers do not organize competitions for the day job and we noticed that our original idea is disappearing into the requirements jungle.  So far we have decided to put the competition on hold.

We warmly thank all the competitors who have participated over the years, as well as those who thankfully published our competition announcements on their website.  Thanks and FFFR!

RUS/UKR 108 – 33 new stations

What a big day – in August! Usually we are closing the Sporadic E season little by little at this time of year. When I was setting up a 5-el Triax on OG6M a week ago, I never believed something like this would be still coming on – after the total flop called ”Season 2019”.

Definitely the season’s best conditions took place on Aug 15, 2019. The MUF reached 108 MHz for 4 hours. The skip was hitting to the border region of RUS and UKR, to a relatively small area. There have been many changes in Donetsk/Lugansk region and new stations popping up, so this opening brought me 33 new reception reports with only one Sony XDR-F1HD. Personally, this was probably the best ES day ever, what comes to the number of new identified stations. Luckily I have no SDR all band receiver – such a day with SDR would mean a total no-life for the rest of year!

Activating new FMDX QTH in Central Finland

After so many missed FM openings during work days, a crazy idea of setting up a Yagi in work has finally come true. Just few steps from Petäjävesi Radio and Telephone Museum, where I do work, is located an amateur radio station OG6M.

The station building is now equipped with a 5 element Yagi and Sony XDR-F1HD (with GTK modification, but currently running without it).

After first test listening the location seemed to be fair for FMDX. The band is surprisingly free from local stations compared to my home QTH, even it is just 27 km away. During the test listening Estonian Radio Elmar 91.7 (372 km / 7.5 kW) could be added to the bandscan (must be a regular station there). Such a distance indicates always good. Only in the next day I happened to hear already first SpE stations in this new QTH during a short opening to Benelux. So no more missed ES openings because of the work! In addition there are many free frequencies, which are blocked in my home QTH. FMDX results from radio museum can be found here.

Central Finland is going to have a thick forest of Yagis, when JJH’s remote station will be rocking and ready, just 8 kilometres from OG6M.
